  IMPORTANT NOTE

Hello Everyone -

Direct Supply has been graciously hosting and sponsoring our group for quite some time now, and we are very appreicative. Due to a variety of reasons they have asked that all guests not arrive more than 30 minutes prior to the meeting. It is disruptive to have many people there early while people are still working. They have also asked that I announce that they will be closing the gates at 7:30 PM as well so that their security staff can go on about their regular business, so please be there before that or you may not be able to get into the building.

Also, I wanted to remind you that Direct Supply has always been very accomodating to our group. It goes without saying that we should remember to show their staff and property the highest respect. They don't have to host us, but they choose to. Please keep that in mind while you are on their campus.

Thank you.

  Our Next Meeting

May 7, 2013

Game Development on Windows 8 (Windows 8 Dev Series, Part 3)
with Adam Hoffman and Clark Sell

Note: Due to a scheduling conflict, we are meeting on the first Tuesday of May instead of the second.

Also, due to a comedy of errors, there has been another last minute change to tonight's meeting location. We are now meeting at:

SafeNet Milwaukee
10700 Research Drive
Wauwatosa, WI 53226
The conference room is in the lower level of building.

I apologize for the last minute inconvenience. Please share this with anyone you know that was planning to attend.

Thanks,

Scott

It's time again to dig into Windows 8 App building. This time, we'll help to scratch that secret itch we all have to build games (and get rich doing it). Adam and Clark will be talking about game creation on Windows 8 in general, and a tool called Scirra Construct 2 in specifics (get your free copy at www.scirra.com). We'll give an overview of the tool, and then dig into some specific topics that you might run into creating a "snack-sized" game for Windows 8. We'll discuss stuff like sprite collision, path finding, turret style behaviors and more – don't worry, Scirra makes it all really easy. By the end of the night you'll see just how easy it is to build a game for yourself, and then get it published to the Windows 8 Store.

Also, don't forget that we're still giving away that Surface to someone who has created a new app, or made a significant update to an existing app. You must be present to win – bring us your apps!

About Adam Hoffman
Adam is an Evangelist for Windows Azure, working for Microsoft. By day, you can likely find him somewhere in the midwest, driving to yet another whiteboarding/deep-thinking session, ready to figure out how the cloud can save your family from certain doom, and make you rich and successful in the process. Before he started evangelizing, Adam was a Senior Developer Lead for Microsoft in Redmond, working on Office 365, BPOS, and Office Live. He misses Redmond, and the excitement of the mother ship, but the call of bitter cold and lots of snow in Chicago was too much for him, and he had to return. Lucky for you! When he's not evangelizing, he likes to spend time with his wife and kids, telling them how the cloud will benefit them as well.

About Clark Sell
Name a role in the software industry, and Clark has probably played it. He started as a Y2K tester and has since worked as a developer, lead, "build monkey," solutions architect and product manager. His professional sweet spot however, lies in designing and building software solutions that make life easier – there's no chance for boredom and constant opportunities for growth. Clark is MCSD certified and received top Microsoft honors with the Circle of Excellence Award. He's a graduate of Western Illinois University and before joining Microsoft in 2005, he served as a solutions architect at Allstate Insurance Company. As a senior developer evangelist and Visual Studio team system ranger, Clark brings a good dose of humor and a zest for life to the podium. You can hear Clark's technical musings on "The Smackdown" at DeveloperSmackdown.com and The Thirsty Developer Podcast – or find him getting grease under his nails in the garage. Clark's a muscle car fanatic who's currently finishing a body-off restoration of his 1970 Chevrolet Camaro while driving his 1968 Camaro SS.

  Windows 8 Development Series

Are you working on a Windows Store application? Great! There is a lot of opportunity to win some prizes for submitting apps right now. And if you have any questions, we have a few options for you. Clark Sell from Microsoft is having office hours in Milwaukee for the next several weeks. It's a great opportunity to come get some one-on-one time with an expert so sign up soon.

Also, be sure to bring those questions, and your laptop, with you to Deeper in .NET. Clark will be hosting a Windows 8 Workshop all day at Deeper in .NET and will be available to answer any questions you have and offer tips to help you build a successful application. He'll be there as soon as registration opens at 7AM, and will have times available throughout the day. More detail below in a note from Clark.

Keep the Cash...

Right now is a pretty good time to get started doing app development for Windows. From now until June 30th you have an opportunity to receive a $100 per app up to $2,000 for every app that you've submitted into the Windows Store or Windows Phone Store. You can find all of those details here.

Microsoft in partnership with Deeper in .NET has decided to up the ante a bit. From now until May 7th if you update your app or submit a new one, you will be entered to win a Microsoft Surface RT at the May 7th WI .NET Users Group meeting. You must be present to win.

From Scott: Don't forget to submit any apps you build to the Community Apportunity Sweepstakes for a chance to win up to $1,000. Plus, if you enter the sweeps using our link and you win, the WI .NET Users Group will get a matching prize! Support the group while you support yourself!

From now until the, we're here to help the best way we can:

  • In Person Office Hours. Clark Sell will be in Milwaukee each week camped out at the Safenet Consulting offices to help people in person. You can sign up for a slot here. Given the vast geography here in the Midwest, we can also do this over Skype if that works. Don't worry about the time slots, if we need more, we will take more.
  • Skype. Just reach out to Clark Sell at csell@microsoft.com and setup a time to chat.
  • At Deeper in .NET. We have a dedicated space at Deeper in .NET where we can chat and help answer any questions about most anything Microsoft.

Getting started shouldn't be a daunting task, but we all know things can certainly feel like it. To get started, we've put together a simple list of resources:

Thanks,

Clark
