BI: From Database to Warehouse to OLAP to Excel with SQL Server 2008 & Excel 2007 with Christopher J. Barwick
Business Intelligence (BI) has become increasingly important in today's marketplace, from the smallest businesses up to the largest firms. Understanding what makes good BI starts with proper foundations.
Those foundations are best understood by asking "What is BI?", working through a few common approaches and finishing by diving into building a real BI solution. We'll use Microsoft technologies to build many of the common BI foundational components including a warehouse, an ETL process, an OLAP database with dimensions and a cube and Excel Pivot Tables.
Another important foundation of a successful BI project is the organization of the project collateral during the development lifecycle. This session will cover the usage of Visual Studio 2008, building up all of the BI collateral into one VS2008 solution.
About Christopher J. Barwick Christopher J. Barwick (Chris) is the Enterprise Data Analytics Team Lead for Big Hammer, a division of Edgenet. There he manages data for Fortune 500 clients and oversees many multi-terabyte projects in SQL 2005, SQL 2008 and SQL 2008 R2.
Because of these high profile projects and his passion for digging into new technologies, he is often engaged in early adopter programs with Microsoft. From a recent deep dive training at Microsoft on StreamInsight, a new product in SQL Server 2008 R2, to being an early adopter of the very first beta of the .NET Framework, Chris went on to start and run the largest F# Forum site www.hubfs.net. (Microsoft's F# Developer Center on MSDN actually uses his site for their forums!)
Chris also has interests in WCF, F#, C#, XAML Workflows and WPF, especially in the new and upcoming VS2010.
When not digging into new Microsoft Technologies, he spends time teaching Unsupervised Machine Learning algorithms to his Jack Russell Terrier "Elsa".
